How to clean your front doors: a comprehensive guide for 2026
Have you ever wondered how to clean the doors in your home? Thanks to this guide, you’ll learn how to restore any type of interior door to its original splendour, whilst preserving the condition of the material it’s made from.

We often tend to think that using specific, expensive products is the best way to avoid damaging the surface. However, as we’ll see in this guide, the most suitable solution can be found in your own kitchen cupboard.

Below, we’ll look at how to clean your wooden doors naturally, how to treat each material to respect its characteristics, and finally, what precautions to take when dealing with a coloured door.

How to clean wooden doors naturally

As we mentioned at the start of this article, people often tend to think of a specific chemical product as the go-to choice for cleaning an interior door. We agree with this theory, but only to a certain extent.

If you need to remove stubborn stains, carry out a specialised treatment or try to restore a damaged door, then we recommend purchasing a specific product.

For normal routine maintenance of the door, however, you can turn to the old ‘grandmother’s remedies’, which are much more natural and gentle: especially for treating wood. Among the most effective and natural remedies are:

  • A mixture of water and bicarbonate of soda – which removes surface stains and gives the door a brilliant shine;
  • A solution of water and natural soap – suitable for removing oily and greasy stains;
  • A solution of water and vinegar – perfect for polishing the door and eliminating bacteria from every surface, including the handle.

Now that we’ve suggested how to clean your doors in a completely natural, as well as economical, way, we can begin our journey by discovering how to clean and sanitise your doors based on the material they’re made of.

How to clean wooden doors

The charm of wood is timeless. Wood is a living material with characteristics that are truly one of a kind. All this is very beautiful, almost philosophical, until one day you wake up and decide to carry out some maintenance on your doors. So, how should you go about it?

Firstly, you’ll need to take a close look at the door frame and determine whether it simply needs a clean or whether you need to remove stubborn stains. Depending on your assessment, you can proceed in two different ways.

In the first case, simply use a microfibre or electrostatic cloth to remove dust and prepare the surface for cleaning. Next, using a cloth dampened with a solution of water and natural soap or bicarbonate of soda, gently wipe the door, taking care not to leave streaks.

Using a second dry cloth, quickly and thoroughly remove any moisture from the surface. This will leave your door looking as shiny and clean as it did the day after installation.

In the second scenario, however, the steps are similar to the previous method, with the sole difference being the use of a specific wood care product that maintains the material’s health by removing stubborn stains, grease or oil without damaging the door.

How to clean lacquered or laminated doors

Lacquered or laminated doors add brightness to a room but can easily show stains or yellowing. To clean the surface of the door, simply:

  • Use a microfibre cloth to remove dust from the surface;
  • Using a damp cloth and either a specialist cleaning product or a solution of water and vinegar, wipe the door without applying excessive pressure;
  • Wipe the surface again with a cloth lightly dampened with water to remove any remaining product or solution;
  • Use a dry cloth or kitchen paper to remove excess moisture to prevent water marks or damp patches.

So far, we have looked at how to clean wooden, lacquered or laminated doors. But what if the door is made of glass or has glass inserts? Let’s look at what you need to do next.

How to clean glass doors

For a thorough and effective clean of a glass door, you will need the following items: a microfibre cloth, a glass cleaner (or a solution of water and bicarbonate of soda if you prefer a natural cleaner), and finally a dry cloth or some newspaper.

Use the microfibre cloth to remove any dirt that has settled on the surface. Once the surface is prepared and dust-free, you can proceed with a deeper clean.

Spray the glass with your chosen solution and, using newspaper – which is ideal for preventing streaks and protecting the delicate glass surface – remove the liquid using a circular motion.

Avoid rubbing the newspaper or microfibre cloth in different directions. This tip ensures a uniform and sparkling finish.

Cleaning interior doors by colour

Cleaning your doors regularly isn’t just about aesthetics, but also about hygiene. Dust, fingerprints and grime can build up on surfaces, especially those that are used most frequently.

Dirty or neglected doors can detract from the look of the whole room, whereas a well-maintained door is a sign of attention to detail and refinement.

Having reached this point in the guide, which has helped you understand how to clean the interior doors of your home, you might be wondering: are there specific cleaning methods depending on the colour of the door?

Below are some useful tips for cleaning white, yellowed and brown wooden doors.

How to clean white doors

To maintain a pristine white finish that will give your doors shine and lustre, carry out a thorough clean at least once a month.

When cleaning, remember not to use overly aggressive chemical products, which could irreparably damage the finish, and avoid using abrasive sponges so as not to scratch the surface.

Opt for a natural solution of lukewarm water and mild soap, applying the liquid with a microfibre cloth and quickly removing any excess moisture with a thoroughly dry cloth.

There are specific products available on the market that can restore shine to the white surface and preserve the door’s appearance. However, only use specialised treatments for stubborn stains that cannot be easily removed with natural products.

How to clean yellowed doors

The main factors causing this discolouration include: exposure to sunlight, oxidation of the materials and, finally, the natural ageing of the enamel.

If the yellowing is caused by a lack of care and attention, cleaning the door’s surface with a solution of water and bicarbonate of soda should restore it to its best condition.

However, if the condition is worse, and you begin to notice some flaking of the enamel, the best solution is to carry out a thorough restoration of the door from top to bottom.

To carry out a complete restoration of the door, you can either consult a professional or do the work yourself. In the latter case, the correct steps to follow are:

  • Thorough cleaning: ensure the door’s surface is completely free of dust, dirt or oily residues;
  • Surface preparation: use sandpaper (or an electric sander for greater precision) to remove the paint or yellowed surface finish;
  • Application of primer: apply a coat of specific primer. Make sure to choose a primer suitable for the type of door (wood or lacquered);
  • Main painting: using a high-quality roller or brush, apply two coats of paint in the desired shade. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second;
  • Finishing and inspection: once the painting is complete, use a microfibre cloth to remove any residual dust or imperfections.

How to clean brown wooden doors

For cleaning, to be carried out once a month, we recommend you review the steps we have already covered in the section on how to clean a wooden door: right at the start of this article.

Once a year, however, it is advisable to use specific products that will moisturise the wood, bringing out the shine of its natural colour.
